Why should I give locally?

As a donor it is easy to feel overwhelmed by choice. No matter how much you have to donate, it is simply not possible to help every cause out there. So how do you choose?

There are hundreds of both national and international charities all worthy of your support, and it is certainly a difficult, if not impossible, task of having to determine which groups are more worthy than others. However, hundreds of local charities and voluntary / not for profit groups on your doorstep that are in desperate need of your support. Without the vast advertising opportunities that national and international charities benefit from, these local groups frequently go unnoticed and are overlooked by donors.

Consequently they have to struggle to get by on very limited funding; with their focus being fixed more on survival rather than maximising how many people they can help. This challenge has been made even tougher in recent years given the current economic climate. One Community hopes to address this is issue by promoting local giving to charities and groups within the Kirklees district.

As there are no current plans from the Government to continue or replace the Grassroots Grants scheme; which for the last two years has provided voluntary sector organisations in Kirklees with grants of up to £5000, now is the time start giving locally.

Regardless of the size of your donation, giving locally will produce a significant impact. It will help to provide support for your chosen charity or group in the short term, and helping to strengthen communities within Kirklees over the longer term.
